The Real Cost of Dubai Schools: What Families Need to Budget For Before Moving

One of the biggest questions families ask before moving to Dubai is:

“How much do schools actually cost?”

And the honest answer is: more than just the annual school fee.

Dubai has an incredible choice of schools, from more affordable options to premium British, IB and international curriculums. But if you are moving with children, school costs need to be one of the first things you plan for.

Because once you add up application fees, uniforms, transport, lunches, activities and extras, the final number can be very different from the headline tuition fee.

Here’s what families need to know.

School fees in Dubai

School fees vary depending on the school, curriculum, location, facilities and year group.

As a general guide:

Lower range schools
Up to 25,000 AED per year per child
Approx. £5,000 per year

Mid-range schools
Around 30,000–65,000 AED per year per child
Approx. £6,000–£13,000 per year

Premium schools
Around 70,000–120,000 AED per year per child
Approx. £14,000–£24,000 per year

For context, I personally pay around 52,000 AED per year per child, which is approximately £10,400 per year per child.

And that is before the extras.

Application fees

Most schools charge an application or assessment fee when you apply.

This can be up to around 500 AED per child, approximately £100.

This fee is usually non-refundable, even if your child does not get a place or you decide not to go ahead.

So if you are applying to multiple schools, this can add up quickly.

Re-registration fees

Once your child is enrolled, many schools also charge a re-registration fee each year to secure their place for the following academic year.

This is often around 5–10% of the annual tuition fee per child.

The good news is this is usually deducted from the first term’s fees, but it still needs to be paid upfront at the time the school requests it.

School transport

School bus fees can be another big cost.

Transport can be up to around 12,000 AED per year per child, which is approximately £2,400 per year.

Some families choose to drive their children to school instead, especially if they live close by. But this depends heavily on where you live, where the school is, traffic, working hours and whether you have more than one school run to manage.

This is why choosing your community and school together is so important.

A cheaper school 40 minutes away may not feel so cheap when you factor in transport, time and daily stress. Dubai traffic likes to humble everyone eventually.

Uniforms and shoes

Uniforms are another cost families often forget to budget for.

You can expect to pay around 1,000–2,500 AED per child, roughly £200–£500, depending on the school and how much you need to buy.

This may include:

  • Daily uniforms

  • PE kits

  • School shoes

  • Trainers

  • Swimwear

  • Bags

  • Hats

  • Winter layers for cooler months

And yes, somehow children grow out of everything the week after you buy it. Standard parenting robbery.

School dinners

If your child has school lunches, this can cost around 4,500 AED per year, approximately £900 per year.

Some families prefer packed lunches, while others use the school catering option for convenience.

Again, it depends on your routine, your budget and how organised you are in the morning. No judgement either way.

After-school activities

Dubai schools often offer a huge range of after-school activities, including sport, music, swimming, dance, gymnastics, football, coding and drama.

These can cost around 5,000 AED per year per club, approximately £1,000 per year.

If your child does multiple activities, or you have more than one child, this becomes a serious line item in your family budget.

School trips

School trips can range from small local visits to bigger residentials or international trips.

You might pay anywhere from 50 AED to 500 AED per trip, approximately £10–£100.

Some trips will be optional, but many families still choose to say yes because they want their child to be included in the experience.

Exam fees

For older children, exam fees can also apply.

For GCSEs, A-Levels, IB, SATs or other board exams, families may pay around 2,000–8,000+ AED in exam fees.

That is approximately £400–£1,600+.

This is especially important to factor in if you are moving with secondary-school-aged children.

Tutoring

Tutoring is optional, but many families in Dubai do choose to use tutors, especially for exam years, entrance assessments, language support or confidence building.

Costs vary widely depending on the subject, age group and tutor experience.

It is not always essential, but it is common enough that families should at least be aware of it as a potential cost.

The extra extras

Then there are the little things that do not always make it onto the spreadsheet but absolutely make it into your bank account.

Things like:

Birthday gifts.
Teacher gifts.
Class parties.
Dress-up days.
Book fairs.
Charity days.
Costumes.
Random “please send your child in with…” messages at 8pm.

The never-ending list.

These are not usually huge costs individually, but across the year, they do add up.

So, how much should families budget?

For one child in Dubai, a realistic annual school budget could look something like this:

Lower-cost school route:
Around 30,000–40,000 AED per year once basic extras are included.

Mid-range school route:
Around 55,000–80,000 AED per year depending on transport, lunches and activities.

Premium school route:
Around 90,000–140,000+ AED per year once everything is factored in.

For families with two or more children, this becomes one of the biggest financial decisions you will make when moving to Dubai.

The biggest mistake families make

The biggest mistake is only looking at tuition fees.

You need to look at the full picture:

Where will you live?
Which curriculum do you want?
How far is the school?
Is transport needed?
Are lunches included?
What are the activity costs?
Are there application and re-registration fees?
What year group is your child entering?
Will exam fees apply soon?

Because school choice in Dubai is not just an education decision. It affects your housing, commute, monthly budget and lifestyle.
